NFL Week 15 Power Rankings

Some subtle shifts are taking place at the top of the NFL heap. While KC still stands at the top, the thin ankles of Patrick Mahomes are once again playing a role in a Chiefs' championship run. Injuries have also resulted in a drop for DET. The Lions have lost enough quality starters on both sides of the ball to put their Super Bowl hopes in jeopardy.

Still, the top of the leaderboard does not look radically different than what most were predicting at the beginning of the season, and a Super Bowl featuring some combination of the first four looks to be the most likely scenario. One could imagine GB or maybe a healthy LAR squad making a run from the NFC. Any AFC team getting by the Chiefs and/or the Bills would represent a major upset.

The overall playoff picture is fairly clear with three weeks remaining. In the AFC, there are no 7-7 teams, so there's a two-game gap between the playoff pack and anyone else with a chance.

In: KC, BUF, PIT and HOU.

Almost in: BAL needs a win in any of its last three games, as does DEN. LAC will need two out of three to punch its own ticket.

Needing a lot of help: CIN, IND and MIA will each have to win out, and get some help.

The NFC is a bit cloudier.

In: PHI, DET and MIN.

Almost in: GB needs to win two out of its last three to punch its own ticket. WAS would need to run the table to do the same.

Still undecided: In the South, TB is a game up over at ATL at 8-6, but ATL has the tiebreaker and the easier remaining schedule. The West is tight, with LAR over SEA, both at 8-6, AZ a game behind, and SF still with a chance at 6-8. DAL is also still alive at 6-8.

A preferred Week 18 scenario, albeit a monument to mediocrity, would have the 8-8 Cardinals finishing against the 8-8 9ers, and the Rams facing the Seahawks, both also at 8-8, while the 9-7 Commanders face off against the 8-8 Cows. One can dream...

NFL Week 14 Power Rankings

Week 14 featured some quality ball, but culminated in the mind-blowingly bad play that finished the Monday night CIN-DAL matchup. That game also featured two of the surprise teams, downside division, in the league this year.

Here's a quick look at the unexpected performers:

Upside surprises

MIN: Supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Vikes. Sam Darnold could be Comeback Player of the Year, but he didn't have much of a career to return to. Still, his play has been incredible.

DEN: Also supposed to be in a rebuilding year. Sean Payton managed to assemble a quality roster in two years while eating $85 million in dead cap money. Bo Nix provides competent QB play and steady improvement as a rookie.

WAS: Year One of another rebuilding project. Jayden Daniels has been a quality starter right out of the box, and his supporting cast has been decent enough.

Downside surprises

DAL: The Cowboys were not great even before the Dak Prescott injury. They're bad now. Jerry is not a personnel guy.

CIN: The weirdest team in the league still has a slim shot at the post-season, but the delta between their potent offense and porous defense is historic.

NYJ: Once again, a league laughingstock. Hard to believe Aaron Rodgers was once one of the most popular people in America.

NFL Week 13 Power Rankings

The Good, The Bad, and The Weird

We've already noted that this season the league has sorted itself into haves and have nots relatively early in the process. Many teams have been almost preordained a spot in the playoffs and many never had a chance of getting there. Right now, though, let's take a moment to celebrate the handful of truly strange, almost inexplicable performances.

ATL (6-6):  Weirdness is nothing new for the Falcons, of course, but they seem to be writing a new chapter this year. Possessors of a decent defense, in the offseason ATL pushed a large pile of chips to the center of the table to obtain Kirk Cousins to generate some offense. While 'ol Kirk did lead a brilliant two-minute drive to beat PHI early in the year, he has been less productive of late. That decline reached a new low at home on Sunday vs. LAC, where the Falcs managed just 13 points and Kirk was picked off four times in a 17-13 loss. Still, ATL is 6-6 and holds the division tiebreaker over TB, an only-slightly less strange team.

CHI (4-8): A team has never so repeatedly self-destructed on national TV as much as the Bears.

The entire NFC West: Favorite SF gets bit hard by the injury bug. So does second choice LAR. AZ, despite losing in MIN Sunday, looks competent and executes well. But the division leader at the moment is SEA, arguably the division's least talented team, led by the somehow revived Geno Smith.

HOU (8-5): A preseason darling of the NFL chattering class, and the worst 8-5 team I've ever seen.

CLE (3-9): Monday night against DEN captured it all.

CIN (4-8): The best offense coupled with worst defense makes for the NFL's weirdest team. The dichotomy between the two units is beginning to attract national attention. Too bad for Joe Burrow.
