NFL Week Five ATS Picks

From a very early age, I was aware of the strong connection between the NFL and gambling. A critical factor in establishing that connection was this book:

Pro Football's Hall of Fame by New York Times sportswriter guy Arthur Daley

It featured short biographies of the inaugural members of the Hall, and old Arthur was a pretty fair wordslinger. I read the cover off that thing. It borders a bit on hagiography, but it does get the facts right.

One of those inaugural guys was New York Giants owner Tim Mara, father of Wellington, grandfather of current managing partner John, great-grandfather of actresses Rooney Mara and Kate Mara (their father Tim is married to Kathleen, who is a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers Rooney family).

Anyway, the senior Mara was a bookmaker, a fact that Arthur Daley manages to sidestep in his rendition. In 1925, Mara was offered a chance to buy into the fledgling National Football League via establishing the New York franchise for $2,500, or about $45,000 in today's terms (I believe I've also heard that number quoted at $500). He took the offer, and the rest is history. The Giants are worth about $6 billion today, which is not a bad ROI.

On to the picks - generated via the proprietary Spreadbuster algorithm:
